Pattison's Academy
5 years ago we were burning the midnight oil to submit our own 501(c)(3) and develop a business plan. 6
months later, we held our first small summer camp at Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church and served 14 children with
severe and multiple disabilities. (This year, in 2010, that same summer program served over 45 children in
Charleston, Dorchester and Berkeley Counties.)
Since that first summer program in 2006, we hired a full time executive director, completed our charter school
application, received approval at the state and local levels, and found a location for our school at Rutledge
Baptist Church.
In addition, we began an equipment loan program so children can have what they need while waiting for financial
assistance - or simply try it before they buy it. We started an after-school dance and movement class, and we
hosted a Cortical Vision Impairment workshop in May with renowned Dr. Christine Roman. We gave support to families,
at their request, by attending IEP meetings. And last but not least, we began a pediatric therapy practice and
started the initial planning for a private pre-school that specializes in serving children with special needs.
The School-Pattison's Academy for Comprehensive Education
The school will offer exceptional team-based, academics and pediatric therapy and rehabilitation for children
with multiple and severe disabilities in grades spanning from Kindergarten to 8th. The students will participate in
community based instruction, field trips, and outside therapy services that are not typically offered in the area's
public schools or in traditional medical facilities. No school in the tri-county area offers the type of
all-inclusive, parent friendly and potential-maximizing services (educationally and medically) that Pattison's
Academy will offer.
We operated a 4 week summer camp in 2006 and served 14 children. In 2010 we grew in order to server over 45
children from three counties. Pattison's Academy Summer Program provides therapy, enrichment and FUN for the
children and a nice break for the care givers of these children. If you are interested in sending your child to our
summer program, please complete an application on-line or download application now. We are
assessing areas for growth (age range, disabilities, locations, duration) so please complete an application to
ensure that you are on our mailing lst and so we may assess the greatest areas of need. We cannot serve your
child if we don't know he or she is out there.
The Equipment Loan Program
We have a variety of items that have been donated to Pattison's Academy. While most of these items are in
us at the school, we have several items we can loan to children to try before you buy or until funding comes
through in order to purchase the item. Stander, strollers, wheel chairs are a few of the items. These
items must be "checked out" by a qualified therapist in the State of South Carolina to ensure proper training and
supports on in place for use of the equipment. Contact us if you
are interested of have questions.
